The concert marathon, featuring instrumental sonatas by the Viennese classic, has become another tradition at the Sochi festival. The audience will hear four concerts in a row – the music of Beethoven will not stop for 7 hours!
“You will do far more than you have done so far; you will never sacrifice a beautiful idea for a tyrannical rule – and you will do well…,” the old master Joseph Haydn admonished his great pupil. As a pianist and improviser, Beethoven found his first rays of fame in Vienna, which was mourning Mozart’s death; noble patrons, among whom were true music connoisseurs, often invited the young musician to play together. From these “home” performances were subsequently born chamber instrumental masterpieces.
The “post-Jubilee” marathon programme includes well-known instrumental cycles (piano sonatas No 5 and 30 and Sonata-Farewell No 26 and the large-scale Cello Sonata Op. 69), as well as the rarely performed ‘Fantasia Sonata’ No.13 (the attendant of the extremely popular ‘Moonlight’ Sonata, which remained in the shadow of the latter), the first Sonata for violin and also variation cycles to themes from Mozart operas written in the early Vienna years, and the true pearl – the Sonatina for mandolin and piano (1796).
Beethoven’s music will be performed by young musicians from Moscow and St. Petersburg, soloists of the St. Petersburg House of Music. The programme includes first prize winner of the Concertino Prague International Competition Elisabeth Kluchereva (piano), winner of the European Piano Competition in Bremen and the Mottram International Piano Competition in Manchester Elisabeth Ukrainskaya, winner of the Rector scholarship of the Moscow Conservatory Timofey Dolya (piano), composer and pianist, winner and special prize winner of the VII International PianoTalents Competition (Milan) Evgeny Evgrafov. Violin sonatas will be performed by Ravil Islyamov, Grand Prix winner of the 12th International Beethoven Competition in Vienna; Anna Savkina, 1st prize winner of the 5th Buchenau Spring International Music Competition (Hesse) and Grand Prix winner of the Astana International Violin Competition; and Arsenia Sibileva, Gold Medal Winner of the 17th and 18th Youth Delphic Games of Russia and the 14th CIS Delphic Games. The cello sonata will be performed by Vasily Stepanov, the winner of the E.A. Mravinsky International Youth Competition (St Petersburg) and the International Competition Riga Classic Strings (Latvia), he was awarded prizes by the Russian Minister of Culture and took part in the recording of music for the film Sobibor; the cello variations on a theme from The Magic Flute will be performed by international competition winner Maxim Akchurin.
The concert will feature the mandolin and domra virtuoso and soloist of the V. V. Andreev State Academic Russian Orchestra. Natalia Kulesh, a guest soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, will take part in the concert.
